PRODUCT INTRODUCTION

Sodium benzoate , also known as benzoic acid sodium salt is made by reacting sodium hydroxide with benzoic acid, is primarily used as additive and preservative in food and beverage applications to reduce or inhibit activity of microorganisms. It is also used in a wide range of other applications such as pharmaceuticals, toiletries, adhesives, pastes, polishes, cleaners, and emulsions.

As a food additive, sodium benzoate has the E number E211. It is bacteriostatic and fungistatic under acidic conditions. It is most widely used in acidic foods such as salad dressings (vinegar), carbonated drinks (carbonic acid), jams and fruit juices (citric acid), pickles (vinegar), and condiments. It is also used as a preservative in medicines and cosmetics. Sodium benzoate is used as a treatment for urea cycle disorders due to its ability to bind amino acids. This leads to excretion of these amino acids and a decrease in ammonia levels.Sodium benzoate is used to treat hyperammonemia.Sodium benzoate has been shown to halt the progression of Parkinson's in mice.

Health and personal care products

  1. Benzoic acid is a moderately effective bacteriostatic and fungi static agent at a pH of 5 or less. A concentration of 0.1 % is used to preserve oral liquid and parenteral products. It is present as an active ingredient in the topical antifungal compound, Compound Benzoic Acid Ointment, in a concentration of 5%.
  2. Benzoic acid is listed as an inactive ingredient in 16 injectable products in concentrations of 0.17 to 5%; 32 oral concentrates, solutions, elixirs, suspensions, and syrups in concentrations of 0.01 to 0.5%; 11 topical creams, lotions, and solutions in concentrations of 0.1 to 0.2%; and 6 vaginal foams, creams, or sponges
  3. Benzoic acid was among the top 20 preservatives used in cosmetics in 1982 and was present in 116 of 20,183 (0.6%) products surveyed by the FDA.3 It is also used in cosmetics to adjust the pH. Types of products include bath products, sachets, shampoos, hair conditioners and rinses, cleansing products, skin fresheners, creams, and lotions
